A Day At The Biltmore Estate

It has been a busy couple of months & dad has been sick which means mom has been stressed out. I was going to wait until Christmas but with everything going on I thought she needed a break from things for a few days.

I decided to give her the Christmas present I got her early this year. She’s wanted to go to the Biltmore Estate for a few years now but she wanted to go during Christmas to see the lights and Christmas trees. Mr. Vanderbilt II was determined to give his wife everything she could’ve wanted. It took him 20 years to build the entire house structured with 68 fireplaces. You could walk in each one of these fireplaces and each had 2 beautifully lit Christmas trees beside them. No room was decorated the same.

I took a few photos inside the estate until a lady with a scowl on her face and a wallow talkie said “I’m sorry miss but there are no photos to be taken inside the estate”. I didn’t want to get us kicked out so I didn’t take anymore inside when she told me to stop. What I missed was the 2nd half of the library, the smoking room, the bowling alley, the Halloween room (creepy), and the entire downstairs with the kitchen, baking room, pantries, freezer, & the servants quarters.

I thought about breaking this into 3 posts but I think I’ll pull the pictures that have multiples of one place because this place was extraordinary & I want you to see everything in one sitting. So please excuse the load time. If it’s too long will someone please tell me & I’ll break up the post.

I think it’s silly when they have no photo rules. It’s a very outdated way of thinking. Photos make me want to go not the other way around. BTW loading was just fine for me and I don’t think it was too many pictures. Such a beautiful estate *sigh* I would love to go and see it in person but I will have to be contented with these few photos.

I know, it is out dated. I guess they don’t want photography shared so they can sell those $60 books about the Estate in the gift shop. Hah. It was gorgeous.

My mom is my best friend, I love that woman, hah. She’s been saying it for a few years now but I finally caught on this year. Plus she already has everything so it was perfect timing.

Oh! Leslie I am so so jealous. I have always wanted to visit the Biltmore Estate. I got close once. We were flown in only for the day to visit a chapel a client want to replicate. We drove by so many signs pointing us there. I even thought I could even see it in the distance once. But no time to go on a tour. What a thoughtful Christmas gift. I hope your Dad is feeling better real soon.

Your so sweet! I’m sorry you’d have to go through that too, lots of love & prayers. My brother kept an eye on him while we were away. It helped mom a lot.

Amazing place! It must have been so much work to get those decorations up.

I’ve seen some of the Vanderbilt mansions in Newport, but I’ve never any of the others, so it was cool to see your photos. Load time was find for me, btw.

Hope you dad (and mom!) feel better soon!

You should have told the lady the pics were from your blog, and you would be bringing them free publicity — ha ha. So sorry your dad isn’t feeling well — hugs! 🙂

  15. Oh, I would love to see this during Christmas, it looks absolutely beautiful. I really hate when you are told you can’t take photos 🙁 Even photos with no flash is better than none at all! Oh well! Wow, 68 fireplaces!! I don’t even have a one in my house! That is A LOT of Christmas trees, too! So fascinating!

You would love it! There is so much to see and so much to learn. It took a total of 20 years to build it. The view from the “patio” is amazing. His plot of land is twice the size of DC. Hah, it’s just so crazy.

  18. I have been here too! Nine years ago when I was pregnant with our second child. It is a beautiful estate. Thank you for sharing it with us! I am featuring you tomorrow at our IBA Weekly Roundup 🙂 #ibabloggers
